Chief Financial Officer

Position Summary

Renaissance is looking for an entrepreneurial and collaborative leader to join our Leadership Team in the role of Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

Reporting to the CEO, and working with the Executive Team, the CFO assumes a strategic role in the overall financial planning, implementing, managing and controlling of all financial-related activities for the company. In anticipation of a public listing, the CFO’s focus will be to lead the company’s requirements and successful transition from a private to publicly traded company.

This is a key leadership role and is ideal for a strong collaborative change agent who enjoys an entrepreneurial approach to working in a small company.

Responsibilities Include
Planning & Strategy
Work closely with the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) to:

  • Assist in formulating the company's future direction and supporting tactical initiatives.
  • Provide leadership in the development and continuous evaluation of short and long-term strategic financial objectives.
  • Evaluate and advise on the impact of long range planning, the introduction of new programs/ strategies and regulatory action.
  • Monitor and direct the implementation of strategic business plans.
  • Develop and implement financial and tax strategies.
  • Oversee the capital request and budgeting processes.
  • Develop performance measures that support the company's strategic direction.


  • Participate in key decisions as a member of the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Provide executive management with advice on the financial implications of business activities.
  • Provide recommendations to strategically enhance financial performance and business opportunities.
  • Direct and oversee all aspects of the Finance & Accounting functions of the company.
  • Manage and mentor the accounting, administration, human resources, and legal departments.
  • Oversee the financial operations of subsidiary companies and foreign operations.
  • Manage any third parties to which financial functions have been outsourced, such as IT.
  • Implement and oversee the company's transaction processing systems.
  • Implement operational best practices.
  • Participate in the negotiation of due diligence and partnerships.

Financial Information

  • Oversee the issuance of financial information.
  • Personally review and approve all financials including filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission and related exchange regulatory bodies.
  • Report financial results to the Executive Team and the Board of Directors.
  • Ensure the credibility of Finance group by providing timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial trends, and forecasts.
  • Take a hands-on lead position in developing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive job costing system.
  • Manage processes for financial forecasting, budgets, and consolidation and reporting to the Company.

Risk Management

  • Ensure that effective internal controls are in place and ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting in the areas where Renaissance does business.
  • Understand and mitigate key elements of the company's risk profile.
  • Monitor all open legal issues involving the company, and legal issues affecting the industry.
  • Construct and monitor reliable control systems.
  • Maintain appropriate insurance coverage.
  • Ensure that the company complies with all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure that record keeping meets the requirements of auditors and governmental agencies where Renaissance does business.
  • Identify and report risk issues to the ELT, Audit Committee of the Board of Directors.
  • Maintain relations with external auditors and investigates their findings and recommendations.


  • Monitor and manage cash balances and cash forecasts.
  • Support financing activities.
  • Invest funds for maximum benefit to the Company.

Third Parties

  • Participate in conference calls with the investment community when requested.
  • Maintain banking relationships.
  • Support the company with investment bankers and investors when requested.
  • Executive Leadership Team (ELT)
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with senior executives so as to identify their needs and seek full range of business solutions.
  • Prepare and contribute in Executive meetings from a financial, operational and business perspective.

Education & Experience Required

  • CPA with a minimum of 10+ years experience in progressively responsible financial leadership roles, preferably in a research company. MBA would be considered an asset.
  • Entrepreneurial and hands-on approach to complement the Executive Management Team.
  • Hands on experience transitioning and guiding a company from a private to a public entity on a recognized Stock Exchange, preferably Canadian.
  • Meets and is up to date on IFRS and GAAP reporting requirements.
  • Previous experience being part of a team that has completed Public/debt equity financings.
  • Strong understanding and experience of current financial reporting & corporate governance.
  • Willingness to gain a strong knowledge of the company’s business, industry/competition.
  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation.
  • Strong change management and collaboration skills.
  • Strong problem solving and creative skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses,
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and manage well both verbally and written, at all levels of the organization and to external stakeholders.
