Renaissance is looking for a proactive and detail orientated Lab Coordinator to join our Science Team. This role will be based out of our offices located on the University of British Columbia’s main campus, in beautiful Vancouver, BC.

Reporting to the CSO, the Lab Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating the optimized utilization of lab resources to achieve Renaissance’s R&D goals. In doing so, the Lab Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of day-to-day lab operations, identifying and implementing best practices in lab operations, safety, and organization, and taking on project management and lab assignments, when required. Our ideal candidate is an energetic, solutions oriented professional with the innate ability to lead continuous, fast-paced change. Responsibilities Include, but are not limited to:

Lab Coordination
  • Ensures all labs are functioning efficiently, safely and according to best practices
  • Ensures good laboratory practices and established SOPs are implemented and maintained
  • Ensures all lab equipment needed is functioning, properly maintained and calibrated
  • Maintains records for equipment use and administers preventative maintenance program
  • Maintains inventory for microbiology culture collection and other R&D samples
  • Maintains inventory for laboratory notebooks, ensuring proper sign off, record keeping, and archiving protocols are followed
  • Determines inventory requirements and coordinates all orders for lab supplies and equipment
  • Coordinates all WHMIS, safety, first aid, and other training for lab members
  • Develops and implements systems for record keeping and labelling
  • Drives continuous improvement of the lab and its personnel through the identification, planning, implementation, and maintenance of lab operations and project management initiatives, especially with respect to efficient lab operations and communication
  • When required, liaises with 3rd parties such as equipment and consumables suppliers, contractors, service companies, auditors, cleaning and waste management services, etc.
  • When required, advises senior management—through both verbal and written reporting—on lab function, including both new initiatives and ongoing operations
  • Leads and coordinates yeast strain shipments to and from external partners, collaborators, and all third parties, according to established SOPs
  • Coordinates incoming and outgoing data from third party laboratory testing of yeast and other samples. Generates certificates of quality analysis (COAs) and specification sheets from the specified data for various samples/products tested.
  • When required, interfaces and communicates—through both verbal and written reporting—with internal and external stakeholders to provide product specification updates
  • Provides administrative assistance to the CSO, when required 
Laboratory & Office Safety
  • Develops, implements, and is responsible for Renaissance’s safety program including chemical, biological, hazardous materials, and general workplace safety
  • Ensures Renaissance is meeting all regulations and codes with respect to safety including leading the Company’s Safety Committee
  • Provides safety training for all staff, including safety orientation for new employees
  • Correctly disposes old, expired waste or waste chemicals
  • Prepares and maintains all safety documentations (e.g. MSDS, EMP, SOPs, and hazard assessment etc.)
  • Identifies and controls hazardous materials & ensures lab personnel's awareness of hazardous materials
  • Registers lab-use chemicals and updates chemical inventory
  • Conducts a monthly lab inspection, annual internal audits and follows up with audit deficiencies and lab incidents
  • When required, advises senior management—through both verbal and written reporting—on lab and office safety
  • Other duties, as required
Lab Work/Assignments
  • When required, assists laboratory staff with hands on research, especially with respect to culture collection maintenance and fermentation setup/sampling
  • When required, takes on independent research assignments 
Project Management
  • Works with CSO and business development personnel to understand the projects coming down the pipeline, and coordinates research schedules accordingly
  • Works with CSO to coordinate and deploy laboratory resources so as to ensure internal and partner-driven project objectives, deliverables, time lines and budgets are being met
  • Regularly meets with the CSO and lead science team to update project progress and to assist, coordinate and facilitate the completion of projects
  • Identifies and resolves issues when timelines are altered or delayed
  • When required, assists CSO to provide regular updates on project progress to both internal and external stakeholders
  • Utilizes project management software and tools to communicate and coordinate project updates 
Education & Experience Required
  1. BSc in a related field, and at least 2 years experience managing a lab, GLP, QA/QC, previous managerial and project management experience is an asset.
  2. Understands how scientific departments work together, integrate and collaborate to meet R&D and commercial objectives. Applies this knowledge to coordinate the lab and meet R&D and commercial objectives.
  3. Applies knowledge of scientific principles and concepts related to the role to meet R&D and commercial objectives.
  4. Demonstrated success in identifying, planning, implementing and maintaining operational management systems so as to facilitate the efficient and effective operation of an R&D laboratory.
  5. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and present in English; clearly express ideas in written and oral communications. Regularly updates team and runs effective meetings. Ability to effectively communicate information with external partners and effectively represent RBSC's value.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work on complex problems that require an in-depth evaluation of intangible factors. Develops and leads project outlines and implementation plans. Responsible for assessing project goals and results against objectives.
  7. Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining and evaluating project results.
  8. Demonstrated problem solving and critical thinking including troubleshooting operational and project plans so as to develop new and/or optimize existing protocols.
  9. Demonstrated ability to be detail oriented with ability to oversee multiple projects successfully.
  10. Demonstrated ability to prioritize workload and allocate time/resources accordingly. A strong work ethic to coordinate and complete individual and teamwork under tight deadlines in a fast paced collaborative environment.
  11. Demonstrated ability to lead, guide and finalize the development of policies, SOPs and GLP initiatives.
  12. Demonstrated ability to maintain and coordinate excellent records for all lab operations functions including lab notebooks, inventory, equipment, maintenance, waste disposal, reagents, culture collections, sample records, specification sheets, etc.
  13. Demonstrated ability to work well independently and in a team setting; strong self-starter work ethic/attitude.
  14. Demonstrated ability to lead change, adapt and thrive in an entrepreneurial, growing, and changing work environment.
  15. Demonstrated success effectively leading and mentoring junior scientific staff to accomplish goals and celebrate their successes.
  16. Demonstrated ability to develop and oversee a departmental budget. 
Position Details

This is a full-time role. General workdays are Monday to Friday, with the requirement for flexibility to work weekends (for scientific experiments), when needed.
