Post-Doctoral Fellow – Platform Microbial Cell Factories

Position Summary

Renaissance is looking for a proactive and collaborative Post-Doctoral Fellow to join our R&D team to lead the implementation of fundamental and applied research in the field of Platform Microbial Cell Factories (MCFs). This role will be based jointly out of our office and Dr. Thibault Mayor’s office located on the University of British Columbia’s main campus, in beautiful Vancouver, BC.

As the lead scientist on the project, the Post-Doctoral Fellow will be responsible for all aspects of project implementation including:

1. Translating the project hypothesis and objectives into a comprehensive set of actionable experimental plans
2. Conducting literature research as necessary to realize project objectives
3. Appropriately resourcing the project including identifying and developing experimental tools, methods, and equipment necessary to successfully conduct the project
4. Executing the experimental plan including collecting, analyzing and interpreting data as appropriate.
5. Capturing and reporting on project deliverables including internal reporting, peer-reviewed publications, patents, and other forms of verbal and written communication.

It is envisioned that the Post-Doctoral Fellow will utilize the resources of both the Mayor and Renaissance labs, and will conduct experiments in both locations as appropriate in addition to training and mentoring 1-2 graduate student level scientists to aid in the project implementation.

About the Project 

Platform Microbial Cell Factories are used to produce an array of compounds including various primary and secondary metabolites, bulk, fine and specialty chemicals, proteins, enzymes, and other extracted products, including pharmaceuticals. Supplementary to the metabolic engineering needed to produce the compound of interest, factories must be optimized for titer, rate, and yield (TRY) in order to achieve commercial viability. Many TRY influencing factors—such as growth rate, substrate utilization, metabolic flux, stress tolerance, protein folding/stability, secretion, etc.—are complex, multigenic traits. Therefore, they are ideally suited for enhancement via holistic, organism-level development methods—such as selective breeding and/or adaptive evolution—rather than targeted genetic engineering. This project aims to use such methods to systematically develop yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae)-based, platform MCF strains for the production of heterologous compounds.

Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to)
  • Uses professional scientific and managerial concepts to lead the implementation of research in Platform Microbial Cell Factories
  • Research and advise on targets for strain development based on current academic, patent and industrial literature
  • Develop research concepts/ideas into actionable experimental plans designed to test ideas/hypotheses and/or develop proof-of-concepts/prototypes
  • Determines suitable methods and procedures for project implementation
  • Plans and allocates research resources accordingly, developing novel tools and methods when needed
  • Implements research plan by independently performs experiments, capturing relevant data, and analyzing and interpreting results
  • Independently troubleshoots and pivots experiments as required
  • Translates experimental results and conclusions into reports, technical sheets, peer-reviewed publications, patents, so as to convey results to the appropriate stakeholder 
Education & Experience Required
  • PhD in relevant field
  • 2+ years relevant industry experience, with a focus on microbial metabolic engineering and TRY optimization
  • Experience with sterile techniques and microbiology
  • Experience with yeast genetics, micromanipulation, selective breeding, and adaptive evolution
  • Experience with molecular biology, CRISPR gene editing, and cloning
  • Strong data analysis skills
  • Strong independent scientific skills, including experimental design and troubleshooting
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent documentation and organizational skills, including project management and reporting
  • Impeccable attention to detail
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative, team-based environment as a self-motivated person, fast learner, team player, and creative problem solver 
Position Details

This is a full-time role. General workdays are Monday to Friday, with the requirement for flexibility to work weekends (for scientific experiments), when needed.
