Research Scientist, Molecular Biology Group

Position Summary

Renaissance is looking for a proactive and collaborative Research Scientist to join our R&D team for the implementation of fundamental and applied research in the field of yeast strain development for use as functional molecule delivery platform.

This role will be based out of our offices located on the University of British Columbia’s main campus, in beautiful Vancouver, BC.

The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of project implementation including:

1. Translating the project hypothesis and objectives into a comprehensive set of actionable experimental plans
2. Conducting literature research as necessary to realize project objectives
3. Appropriately resourcing the project including identifying and developing experimental tools, methods, and equipment necessary to successfully conduct the project
4. Executing the experimental plan including collecting, analyzing and interpreting data as appropriate
5. Capturing and reporting on project deliverables including internal reporting, peer-reviewed publications, patents, and other forms of verbal and written communication.

The Research Scientist will work under the direct supervision of the Lead Research Scientist (Molecular Biology Group) and will work alongside other Research Scientists in the Molecular Biology team to ensure that Renaissance’s R&D and commercial goals for this project, and others, are met.

Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to)
  • Independently uses professional scientific concepts to lead the implementation of research in the development of yeast for use as a functional molecule delivery platform
    • Research and advise on targets for strain development based on current academic, patent and industrial literature
    • Develop research concepts/ideas into actionable experimental plans designed to test ideas/hypotheses and/or develop proof-of-concepts/prototypes
    • Determines suitable methods and procedures for project implementation
    • Plans and allocates research resources accordingly, developing novel tools and methods when needed
    • Implements research plan by independently performs experiments, capturing relevant data, and analyzing and interpreting results
    • Independently troubleshoots and pivots experiments as required
    • Translates experimental results and conclusions into reports, technical sheets, peer-reviewed publications, patents, so as to convey results to the appropriate stakeholder
  • Assists and consults with other R&D staff on additional projects, as necessary and within limits of expertise, in other disciplines such as cellular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, etc.
  • Uses professional managerial concepts to function as an integral member of the overall scientific team
    • Regularly meets and collaborates with colleagues to ensure the continuous flow of information and projects
    • Regularly compiles, critically analyzes and summarizes research results/data, for presentation to senior scientific staff to update on research development, relative to project objectives
  • If required, supports sales with technical issues and questions from customers and distributors
  • If required, supervises and mentors junior scientific staff
    • Effectively organizes time, resources, and actions of junior scientific staff to ensure departmental R&D goals, as well as broader corporate goals, are being met
    • Develops junior scientific staff by assigning tasks and teaching scientific principles and experimental techniques
    • Ensures required experiments/work is being conducted efficiently and accurately
    • Develops and implements resource planning methods to efficiently allocate required resources to projects
    • When required, provides effective personnel management to junior staff and proactively identifies and remedies departmental conflicts
  • Independently plans, budgets, sources and allocates resources for research projects
  • Contributes as a team member to all areas of business
  • Additional duties, as required.
Education & Experience Required
  • PhD in relevant field
  • 3+ years relevant industry experience, with a focus on microbial metabolic engineering. Direct experience with yeast engineering is an asset.
  • Experience with sterile techniques and microbiology
  • Experience with yeast genetics, micromanipulation, selective breeding, and adaptive evolution
  • Experience with molecular biology, CRISPR gene editing, and cloning
  • Strong data analysis skills
  • Strong independent scientific skills, including experimental design and troubleshooting
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent documentation and organizational skills, including project management and reporting
  • Impeccable attention to detail
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative, team-based environment as a self-motivated person, fast learner, team player, and creative problem solver
Position Details

This is a full-time role. General workdays are Monday to Friday, with the requirement for flexibility to work weekends (for scientific experiments), when needed.
